PRESIDENT’S REPORT

PAUL MCMASTER

Welcome to another edition of the Lorne Mower.

And what can we say about the current year other than, “what a year”!!

As the state is currently opening up, I hope all our members are safe and well and you have all managed to navigate the challenges we faced this year in the best way possible for you, your family and friends. It has been fantastic to see so many of groups within the club stay connected in different ways during the lockdown to maintain the special Lorne SLSC bond that we all share.

As a club we have been working hard in the background to create a season that will be as normal as possible, however the club facilities and programs delivered this season will look different.

A big thank you to our COVID-19 Safe Co-ordinator Jo Pincus and all the members of the COVID-19 committee who have been working consistently in the background to manage and implement all the requirements and guidelines from LSV to enable to club to function as normal as possible this season.

Some of the changes to the club house will include:

• limited facility access to certain areas with some areas remaining closed,
• members only access and with a QR Code and Key Tag sign in for all areas of the club,
• most of the programs, especially over November, December and January will be conducted with limited numbers.

I do thank members for their patience with the communications related to these changes, as new information and adjustments to guidelines is still unfolding daily as restrictions are eased further.

Club operations/patrols along with the Training and Assessment team have also been working tirelessly implementing the guidelines and modifications for our volunteer patrols and training for our members for the year ahead. A big thank you to the training and assessment team who have managed to organise an Adult Bronze course already and are adapting our programs for Bronze and Silver Camps and to put together multiple re-qual dates.

The Pier to Pub is coming off its 40th year and possibly the biggest year in the event’s history. This year, the event will continue to create history by holding a Virtual Pier to Pub and Mountain to Surf event. John Takac and the Events Committee have been working hard in the background to consider many different options for hosting the event and ultimately, the virtual event was a best option for the Club. Special thanks to our Major Sponsor, Powercor and many of our other Sponsors for their continuing support of our virtual event. Also a special mention to Mike Napolitano and Tina Westicott for all their work on securing this valuable sponsorship for our virtual event.

For the first time in 40 years, we are asking our wonderful volunteer members who provide so much effort to help run the event, to this year sign up for the swim and run and compete in the event. We welcome and encourage all members to take the opportunity to register and complete the virtual event.

Like many events in 2020, the Life Saving Victoria Awards of Excellence was a virtual event and it was great to share the night with many of the members to support all the Lorne nominated members.

For those who missed the results, we are very proud to announce that Lucas Karlson was awarded the Victoria Youth Lifesaver of the Year. In addition, Heath Armstrong was awarded an ML&D Merit Award and the Club was recognised for our Youth GAP Year Program, awarded with LSV’s inaugural Innovation Award. This program was headed up by Lucas Karlson and Flynn Thompson. Well done everyone!

The life blood of our club is our members and in what has been a difficult year, we need as many people as possible renewing their membership to the club. These membership fees go directly back into the club, providing the necessary life saving equipment and maintenance to enable us to keep the beach safe. If you are in a financial position to renew your membership, it would be of great assistance to the club and most appreciated. If you are experiencing financial hardship, please contact the club and we will be very happy to help out in any way we can.

Even in these difficult times and in a world that is moving towards a “COVID normal”, it is still important to remind all our members what is vital for Lorne and all Surf Life Saving Clubs – keeping our beaches safe.

A new patrol season is finally upon us! It has been a difficult year for a lot of people, but we can now get excited to get back on the beach in a town we all love so much. The patrol dates for the season are now finalised, and everyone should hear from their Patrol Captains soon. Below is a list of the patrol captains for the coming season.

I’m looking for anyone to help fill in the blanks in history. I have many years of best clubman ‘Sharky’ awards but am missing quite a few, from 1960 to 1972!  I would like to have all documented if possible so they can be proudly displayed in the clubhouse!

BOARD AND SKI REPORT

BILLY BOWDEN

The Lorne SLSC Craft and Swim Team started the year with promising signs for an excellent season leading into Aussies with the biggest team we’ve seen in many years. This is attributed to our head coach, Brent Enticott who has led our team to success from his generosity, clear vision, vast knowledge and watchful eyes. The implications of COVID-19 had influenced Life Saving Australia to cancel the Australian Titles and left many of us feeling lost and upset. However for some, this has given ample time to practise and learn how to run, paddle and swim in our own time. Many of us have been lucky enough to escape Melbourne lockdowns and reside by the coast, allowing for extensive improvements. After many months training individually or in small groups, we’re now fortunate and thankful that we can train again as a group while abiding to restrictions and we are all looking forward to a new year of competition and training.

*Important Announcement*

The club has made the difficult and sensible decision to close the club shed to its members with the exclusion of the competition team. This means that communal boards will be off limits until further notice and access to the shed is only permitted to the competition team to gain access to their private craft in an attempt to reduce the likelihood of the spread of the virus.

We are an inclusive group full of experience and skill. If you are considering competitive lifesaving at a senior level, regardless of your ability, or you’re wanting to learn more, drop by and try out! Club members can join our Facebook page to stay up to date on announcements, results, competition and training schedules and photos. The page is titled “Lorne Clubbies”.

Nippers is coming!

Thank you to everyone who completed the EOI process and for those offered a place, for quickly completing the required registration.

For those that missed out, we are sorry, but hope you understand we had some hard decisions to make.

What’s next. We’ll be in touch in due course with information on what the program will look like including kit pick up. We are working through various restrictions, and while the program will be different this year, we still expect it to deliver in the important areas of surf and beach education, skills and awareness, collaboration and fun!

The Lorne Nippers Competition Squad are loving being back together again.

Training takes place Friday night and Sunday.

Board, swimming, wading and running skills are improved each week in a fun team environment. The beautiful Lorne beach offers unique challenges every week.

Last season the Lorne Surf Sisters were born as an initiative to empower females with the support of our male champions.

Last season Lorne held its first Pink Patrol, this was a fantastic day to celebrate our very capable female lifesavers and how far females have come in lifesaving in the last 40 years.

During the year throughout isolation we have been hosting Zoom exercise sessions on Saturdays. Hosted by our members including Ella dingle, Taylor Mawkes, Nick Murnane, Nic Lukies and Ed Callan. This was a great chance for members to stay in contact out of season and keep fit ready to patrol our beaching.

This season we are looking forward to Pink Patrol again and hosting more in person sessions based around physical skill and leadership development targeted at all ages. We encourage all members to keep an eye out on for our Instagram account @lorneslscsurfsisters as all are welcome to join our events.

We are very fortunate to belong to such a supportive and progressive club and want to thank Lorne SLSC and its members for all these incredible opportunities and connections we are building.

A little note to say a big thanks for all your years supporting the Pier to Pub and
Mountain to Surf!

While we all can’t come together on the foreshore, we have some exciting news for
you. As the 2021 events are VIRTUAL, all members are able to whip out their
swimming and running best and enter the Pier to Pub and Mountain to Surf.

Instead of volunteering your time over the event weekend, you can continue to
support the Club by completing the 8km run or 1.2km swim – anywhere, anytime.
Let’s ramp up the family competition and friendly rivalries to make this something to
remember.
