2019 State Masters

The 2019 State Masters titles held at Lorne on Saturday 9th Feb were a raging success, for Lorne and for all clubs and competitors.  Conditions ranged from glorious sunshine to sideways rain, along with a swell that kept building throughout the day.  Lorne scored in the medals, with the biggest turn out of competitors in many years, with the main results being:

Three surf boat crews raced, for three Gold medals:

  • The Lorne All Stars 140 men
  • Lorne Durey 140 women
  • Lorne Again, backing up their Aussie and World Championship Golds in 160 women.
In the Swim, Board, Ski and Beach areas, Gold medals for:
  • Tristan Read in the Ironman, Surf race & Tube race
  • Double ski for Sonia Grundy and Lisa Wadling
  • Lisa in both the ski and board
  • Cheryl Boness in the Surf race
  • Board relay (Lisa, Bec Morarty & Cheryl)
  • Ski relay (Lisa, Bec & Sonia)
  • Taplin (Lisa, Sonia & Cheryl)

Silver for:

  • Bec Morarty in the 2k run
  • Pete Williamson in the Surf race and Tube race
  • Beach relay (Bec, Lisa, Sonia & Julie Cockle)
  • Board rescue (Cheryl and Lisa; and Pete and James Bowden)
  • 130 Surf Teams (Tristan, Brent Enticott and James)

Bronze for:

  • Bec in the Board and Surf races
  • Phil ‘Fanbelt’ Sutton in the Beach run (time to turn that upper limit up a bit on that pace maker Beltboy!)
  • 150 Surf Teams (Nick Newton, Tye Cockle & Karl Russell)
It was great to see some new faces, with Nipper parents among the debutants (Tye and Julie Cockle and Nick Newton – a 3 time English Channel swimmer trying the much shorter distances!) – it was certainly an odd role reversal with Nippers cheering on their parents for a change!
There were also some great comebacks after a year or two away (James Bowden, Sonia Grundy and Karl Russell – making a gutsy call with the Ironman first up!)
Well done to everyone, and particular thanks to those who crewed the IRBs, including Nick, Vinnie and Kate amongst others!
A final shout out to Julie who is now facing quite a period on the sidelines with a ruptured Achilles – all the best for your operation and recovery Julie!
All in all a great day and the most competitors we have had in a quite a few years – can’ t wait to make it even bigger and better next year – thanks everyone, and go Lorne!
