AGMs are usually not considered a particularly exciting event to attend, but the Lorne Surf Club’s 79th AGM held recently was a great afternoon with a strong turnout. A big thank you to those members who were able to attend. It was an amazing winter’s day, a successful meeting and great catch ups with friends over a drink at Tom’s Bar afterwards.

One thing you might notice, we now have Directors. This is a name change from the previous term of “Vice President – ….” This was done to bring our club into line with other surf life saving organisations, provide more clarity on the committee structure and to allow for the creation of a Vice President position.
Farewell to our past President
The AGM was the final meeting for Heath and we need to give a very special thank you for the great work he did, steering the club for the past three years.
He has been a calm, steady and hard working hand. He not only led us through some very challenging times and events, he was often at the club doing the hard yards above and beyond the usual tasks of a club President. From getting out his blow torch to do some running repairs to making sure the Easter bunny hid the eggs properly. We’ll always be very grateful for Heath stepping up when he did, and we are sure all members wish him and Jenny the best as they move in the role of parents of little Frankie.
Announcing our new incoming President
We’re delighted to introduce Kate as the new President of Lorne SLSC, succeeding Heath and building on his outstanding contribution to the Club.
Surf lifesaving has been part of Kate’s life since she joined Nippers in Western Australia at the age of eight. She went on to represent WA at the national championships for 15 years, continuing a family connection to surf lifesaving that spans several generations.
Since joining Lorne SLSC ten years ago, Kate has become a familiar face to many members through her active involvement in patrols, her role as a First Aid Officer, responsibility for Nipper Water Safety Summer Intensive Programs, recipient of the 2025 Sharky Award, and participating in Masters.
Speaking at the AGM, Kate reflected on what makes Lorne SLSC so special: its strong sense of community, the close connection between the Club and the town, and the shared commitment of its committee and members – from supporting one another and building skills to protecting the public and saving lives. She is excited by the opportunities ahead and looks forward to building on the strong foundations established under Heath’s leadership.

A very special Life Membership – Celebrating a treasured member
The AGM heard from Brad Cook, who spoke to Sam Brooker’s nomination
for Life Membership.
Brad’s words were a moving tribute to a legendary member of the Club. Sam was a devoted member for 57 years, and when he tragically died in 2025 he was getting ready for his 58th year as a valued club member. We were privileged to have Sam’s sister, Henrietta attend to receive the certificate and Life Member medallion. The full speech presented by Brad can be downloaded and read here.
